The following admission requirements apply; refer to the NAS 2024 Rule Book for more information.
Undergraduate programme
B Consumer Science
Please note: The undergraduate programme of Consumer Science is not a selection programme; therefore, applications are subject to UFS prescribed dates and guidelines:
- NSC or NCV with an endorsement that allows access to degree studies or an equivalent qualification.
- A minimum AP of 30.
- A performance level 4 (50%) in an official tuition language.
- A performance level 2 (30%) for Mathematics or 5 (60%) for Mathematics Literacy.
- Participation in the National Benchmark (NBT) tests for language.
Postgraduate programmes
BSc (Hons) Consumer Science
- A Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent NQF Exit Level 7 qualification with at least 65%.
- All Honours Degrees are selection courses and admission to these degrees is subject to approval of the Academic Departmental Head.
- Students from other institutions should apply online for admission to the Honours Degree.
- UFS students can complete a DV 4 form and submit to Dr I van der Merwe.

Master’s
- Applicants must have an applicable Bachelor or Honours degree or equivalent NQF level 8 exit qualification, with an average of 65% in the exit year of the relevant honours degree, as well as the additional requirements, as required per discipline (see Reg. NAS3.5).
- If a student does not entirely meet the admission requirements, the Dean, in consultation with the Academic Departmental Head, in meritorious cases may recommend that some concessions be made in respect of the requirements.
- All master’s degrees are selection programmes and admission to these degrees is subject to approval of the Academic Departmental Head.
Students from another institution should apply online for admission to Master’s Degrees. UFS students can complete a DV 4 form and submit to Dr I van der Merwe. .

- The master’s research starts on a date as determined by the student and relevant supervisors.
PhD degrees
- Applicants must have a master’s degree or equivalent NQF level 9 exit qualification.
- All PhD degrees are selection programs and admission to these programmes are subject to approval by the Academic Departmental Head.
- The prospective PhD candidate must demonstrate that he/she has sufficient knowledge of the subject matter prior to admission.
